Armstrong Wins Overall
Suzuki SX4 driver triumphs over strong field in tarmac sprint event
Neil Armstrong left it until the final stage of the Barbados Rally Club’s Summer Nights Tarmac Sprint to stamp his authority on a quality 40 car field and record the fastest overall time of the night. With intermittent rain making conditions extremely challenging, Armstrong finished ahead of fellow WRC entrants Paul Bourne (Ford Focus WRC), Roger Skeete (Subaru WRC) and Dean Serrao (Subaru WRC), recording a blistering 1.49.27 over the 3.5 kilometre course, his winning margin a full second ahead of the rest of the field.
The Suzuki SX4 WRC was perfect all night, with Armstrong collecting points for first overall and first in the WRC-1 class. Data logging on the car recorded a top speed of 197.1kmh (123mph) during one section of the course which is notable as it was wet and dark.
Neil had this to say: “I really enjoyed the event on Saturday night and I am very pleased with the result. I think this win came at an important time for both me and the team and hopefully we can carry this momentum through the rest of the year. The car worked absolutely flawlessly. Huge thanks to the team who has been working hard to make sure we continue to progress.
The conditions were far from perfect with intermittent rain throughout the night and of course the fact that it was a night event created its own set of challenges. All in all I think both the competitors and the spectators had a great time.”
