The Caribbean is hot all year long, with high humidity and intense, direct sunlight. Because of this, there's a myth that car batteries cannot function long-term in these types of environments, as "heat destroys phone batteries, so it must destroy car batteries". This would be even worse for electric vehicles like those created by the Suzuki brand if that was at all true. EVs can survive the heat, and understanding how can help you maximize the lifespan of your battery.
Lithium-ion batteries generally prefer the same temperature range as humans, which is around 70 degrees Fahrenheit or 21 degrees Celsius. There's also a major difference between a lower battery capacity and your vehicle's range. Short-term range loss is just performing extra activities in your vehicle that can cause the maximum distance your vehicle can travel to be reduced between charges. Long-term battery degradation that lowers your maximum capacity is something that happens more gradually over time.
Electric vehicles aren't just giant phones, but have a sophisticated cooling system to ensure peak performance and comfort. Some systems use liquid cooling, acting like a radiator for the battery that constantly circulates coolant to prevent the pack from overheating, even when driving on hot asphalt. Air cooling is similar, but instead circulates cold air through the system. There's also thermal buffering, which reduces the speed at which an EV may recharge when the battery gets too hot to protect its cells.
Suzuki's Smart Hybrid (MHEV) technology is present in several of our featured brand's models, providing smaller batteries that are positioned and protected to thrive in the tropics, without the massive cooling demands of full EVs. Even so, Suzuki tests its EVs, like the newly released Suzuki e Vitara, in extreme heat and tropical locales to ensure they have the greatest longevity.
If you want to get an electrified vehicle for yourself, but aren't sure which model, schedule a test drive at any one of our Suzuki dealers in the Caribbean. If you have any other questions about EVs or their battery life, please contact us online at Suzuki Caribbean.
