The Suzuki e-Vitara is an incredible electric vehicle made by our featured brand, allowing you to save on fuel by not having to spend on gas ever again! For simplicity's sake, the real question is if you can just plug your e-Vitara into a regular wall socket and charge it that way. Technically, you can, but speed will depend on whether your island uses 110V or 220V power, and whether you're using a standard plug or an upgraded wall charger. Regardless, charging at night will allow you to wake up to a "full tank" every morning.
The Caribbean doesn't have a single, unified power grid. Islands like the Bahamas, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico run on 110V like the US, while Barbados, Trinidad, and St. Lucia run on 220V/240V like the UK and EU. Plugging your e-Vitara into a standard 110V household outlet works, but only adds about three to five miles of range per hour, which is perfectly fine for overnight top-ups if you have a short commute. On a 220V standard plug, it's faster but still limited by the basic wall socket.
The e-Vitara comes with two battery options: a 49 kWh battery that's perfect for daily island hopping, and a larger 61 kWh battery for maximum range. Completely filling up a 61 kWh battery from a standard 110V outlet could take well over 24 hours, which is why standard outlets are for topping off and not filling up from zero.
For faster charging, you can get a 7kW to 11kW AC home wallbox. A 7kW charger can fill the 49 kWh battery in about 6.5 hours, and the 61 kWh battery in about 9 hours. An 11kW charger brings those times down to roughly 4.5 hours and 5.5 hours, respectively. These need to be installed by an electrician, as they require a dedicated circuit like an electric stove or A/C unit.
Because of regular tropical storms, there is some concern about fluctuations and surges. The e-Vitara's internal systems protect the battery, but installing a smart wallbox with built-in surge protection is the best way to insulate your vehicle from lightning storms and brownouts. In addition, if you have solar panels at home, charging the e-Vitara during the day means you can take advantage of the sunshine to charge up for free!
While you can use a standard outlet in a pinch, a wallbox is the ultimate charging station for e-Vitara owners. If you're interested in getting this model for yourself, contact our team at Suzuki Caribbean and learn about home charger options or recommended local electricians.
